11.02.2022: Roundtable #Integration

The topic of flight and migration is becoming more and more present in our everyday lives. This requires new socio-political thinking and renewal of existing structures. How can new framework conditions be created for successful integration?

We discussed with our roundtable speakers, Mr. Rafael Sánchez-Moreno and lawyer Ivon Wandtke-Ossei-Poku, the causes of migration, the effects of prejudices/stereotypes towards migrants and strategies for the public discourse of the migrant community.

Reasons for migration can be very different: People come to Germany to study, to work as specialists in IT and the natural sciences, or because they are politically persecuted in their home country or see no economic prospects for themselves there.

In the media and politics, the focus is still on poverty migration, although Germany urgently needs qualified people to compensate for the demographic change.

Especially for highly qualified people, Germany does not seem very attractive because prejudices/stereotypes and their effects (e.g. racial profiling by security forces) have a deterrent effect on them. Legal barriers such as exclusion from elections or restrictions on obtaining dual citizenship also contribute as symbols of not belonging to society.

Integration is not a one-way process that only migrants have to undertake. In order to advance the integration process of society as a whole, however, migrant initiative is particularly needed: let's talk publicly about the positive aspects of migration, let's create role models. Germany is a free country, let's use our opportunities in politics, in social media.
